Area Information on Mebane, NC

Mebane, North Carolina is a rural community located in both Alamance County and Orange County.

The city was originally named after General Alexander Mebane, Jr., who was a Revolutionary War general as well as a U.S. Congressman.

Although it was originally referred to as Mebanesville in 1881, that name was later shortened to Mebane in 1883.

As of the 2010 Census, the 8.5-square-mile city of Mebane had a population of about 11,393.

Education in Mebane

School-aged children living in Mebane are served by both the Alamance-Burlington School System as well as the Orange County School system.

Specifically, students living in this community attend:

  • Audrey W. Garrett Elementary School
  • South Mebane Elementary School
  • E. M. Yoder Elementary School
  • Woodlawn Middle School
  • Hawfields Middle School
  • Eastern Alamance High School

In addition, there are several private schools conveniently close to Mebane, including the Christian school, Bradford Academy.

And as with all communities in the greater Triangle area, Mebane has access to some of the best public and private universities in the country, such as:

  • Duke University
  • UNC-Chapel Hill
  • NC State University
  • And others!

Recreational Amenities In and Around Mebane

Although Mebane is a relatively small community, there is still plenty to do in the immediate area.

Local parks in the area include:

  • Lake Michael
  • Quaker Creek Reservoir
  • Quarry Hills Country Club

Those who like sports will be pleased to know that there are plenty of sports teams that play in the greater Triangle area year-round, including the Carolina Hurricanes, an NHL team.

And thanks to its proximity to so many fantastic post-secondary schools, there is an array of museums, art galleries and more to choose from!
