History of Cary

Samuel Cary is the inspiration for the town’s name; he was an Ohio congressman and prohibitionist admired by Mr. Allison Page. Allison Page turned 300 acres of land surrounding a railroad track and built the first streets, general store, and post office in Cary. In 1868 he built a hotel to accommodate railroad passengers that stopped in town. The town of Cary became incorporated in 1879 and thrived from farmland where tobacco and cotton were grown. Cary was (and still is) full of recreational activities, higher education, and beautiful scenery. The first public school in North Carolina also started in Cary, first named Cary Academy and now known as Cary High School
