Clayton, located in Johnston County (with a small portion that extends into Wake County), is a southeastern suburb of Raleigh that is growing very rapidly. With a current population of over 20,000 residents, many homeowners in the Triangle are looking to Clayton as an option for more affordable housing, as home prices continue to rise in Raleigh and the surrounding suburbs, such as Wake Forest and Cary. According to US Census estimates, the population of Clayton has grown by 35% in the past five years, due to a combination of housing costs, good schools, and overall small-town charm with plenty of attractions.
Clayton home cost
The median home cost in Clayton is much lower than in other towns, like Wake Forest and Cary, which means homeowners are able to get a better value and larger home than if they would have purchased closer to Raleigh or the Research Triangle Park. However, homes in Clayton, like the rest of the Triangle, are appreciating in value very quickly, especially as more new homes and businesses are continuing to be built in the near future.
The schools in Clayton are part of the Johnston County School District, and many of them are highly-ranked and well-loved by parents in the district. Since the schools are under the administration of Johnston County, the district is much smaller in size than the neighboring Wake County Public School System. Many parents feel that there is a more personalized educational experience for students here that is void of a lot of the red tape in neighboring Wake County schools.
