The Beginnings of Creedmoor

This community was originally founded in the late 1880s. Legend has it that the name of the community was derived from an old lexicographer named Mr. Creed Moor, who could often be spotted strolling around town.

The community flourished during the late 1880s, in part because it served as a railroad depot between the Clarksville and Oxford Railroads as well as the Raleigh and Gaston Railroads.

In 1886, Thomas B. Lyon applied to the Postal Department for a post office in Creedmoor and on April 10, 1886, that dream was realized with Samuel C. Lyon becoming the first appointed postmaster there.

After decades of history already on the books, this community was officially incorporated in 1905.

The community particularly flourished during the early 1990s with the tobacco industry. In fact, during that time period, there were four tobacco warehouses built here.

Today, this community is beloved for its small town feel and rich history. In fact, four buildings in the community are on the National Registry of Historical Places.

Mule Capital of the World?

You read that right. After the tobacco era in Creedmoor ended, roughly forty train car loads of mules arrived in the town each year.

The industry flourished, with many local farmers loving the strengths and assets that mules brought to their farm.

By 1940, more than half a million dollars were traded and spent on mules in the area.

Because of this history, it wasn’t until the mid-1950s that the community removed the slogan, “One of the Largest Retail Livestock Markets in North Carolina” from its official letterhead.
