Great ways to celebrate Thanksgiving in the Triangle
It’s Thanksgiving week, and as the day approaches, it’s a great time to reflect on the deeper meaning behind this time-honored tradition. A day that brings families, friends, and communities together in a shared spirit of gratitude, Thanksgiving is more than just a day of feasting. It’s also an opportunity to reflect on our blessings, cherish meaningful relationships, and extend kindness to those in need. As we celebrate Thanksgiving in the Triangle, it’s a great time to enjoy the gift of a warm meal, the company of loved ones, and the kindness of strangers.
The Raleigh-Durham area offers numerous opportunities to both receive and provide meals to those in need. Whether you’re seeking assistance or looking to give back, here are some opportunities to do just that.
Where you can give back for Thanksgiving
Not everyone has the family or resources to celebrate Thanksgiving in the Triangle. For those less fortunate who are looking for a way to celebrate the day, the Triangle area has a few options to help — and where you can give back.
Durham Rescue Mission and Meals on Wheels | 1201 East Main Street, Durham
Durham Rescue Mission is hosting its 50th Annual Thanksgiving Community Dinner for those in need. This event provides a hot turkey dinner with all of the sides. Attendees receive a bag of groceries to take home, and there are numerous giveaways, including a 65” SMART TV, Nintendo Switch, 3 Chrome Books, and bicycles for kids. Dinner is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can also donate and volunteer with the mission during this time.
Operation Turkey Raleigh
Raleigh’s Operation Turkey is a great way to give back to help feed people across the area. Operation Turkey’s volunteers meet the day before Thanksgiving for a Thanksgiving Tailgate to cook turkey and sort donations. On Thanksgiving Day, those in need can get a hot meal delivered. If you’re looking for a great way to give back, get involved or donate to Operation Turkey.
Triangle Nonprofit & Volunteer Leadership Center | 1201 East Main Street, Durham
Alongside the Durham Department of Social Services, the Triangle Nonprofit & Volunteer Leadership Center Thanksgiving Dinner Program provides meals to over 1,700 families. You can sponsor a family, make a donation, or volunteer to deliver meals.
Consider additional ways to provide holiday support
If you have the capacity to give additional support to anyone wanting to celebrate Thanksgiving in the Triangle this year, you can start by looking toward students at the area’s local universities.
Many students, especially international students, stay on campus during Thanksgiving. Many universities close their dining halls over holiday breaks. This leaves students without options to eat over the break.
Schools have food pantries you can donate to that will help with food insecurity experienced by students. These food pantries need both financial support and food donations to help keep students fed.
At North Carolina State University, the resource is the Feed the Pack Food Pantry. Duke offers the Duke University Graduate and Professional Student Community Pantry. And the University of North Carolina has the Carolina Cupboard Community Food Pantry. Other local universities, including Shaw, NC Central University, William Peace, Meredith College, and even Wake Tech have pantries that need resources as well.
By helping these programs, you can help foster a sense of community and gratitude this Thanksgiving.
Celebrate gratitude and togetherness
As Thanksgiving in the Triangle draws near, a great way to embrace the spirit of the season is by finding ways to celebrate and give back. Whether it’s sharing a meal with loved ones, volunteering your time, or supporting those in need, there are countless opportunities to make this holiday meaningful for everyone.
By coming together to support our neighbors — whether through volunteering at a local organization, donating to a food pantry, or inviting someone who might otherwise be alone to join your table — you can embody the true essence of Thanksgiving beyond the table.
