History

Mebane, North Carolina, has a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century. The town was named after Brigadier General Alexander Mebane, who was a well-respected figure in the North Carolina Militia and a former member of Congress during the 1790s. The arrival of the railroad in 1855 greatly influenced the town’s development. It was initially incorporated as Mebanesville in 1881, but its name was changed to Mebane in 1883. Finally, in February 1987, it was designated the City of Mebane.
