Zebulon took its name from Zebulon Baird Vance, the governor of North Carolina during the Civil War. During that same year, the town held its first election, in which Thomas Horton was elected mayor. It didn’t take long before Zebulon began to grow due to a boom in the tobacco market through the 1920s. Later, this Wake County community would annex neighboring Wakefield to increase its size
