History

The town of Knightdale was established thanks to the efforts of its citizens, notably Mr. Henry Haywood Knight. Mr. Knight generously donated land to the Norfolk and Southern Railroad Company to attract rail service to the area, which he believed was crucial for community growth and incorporation. Although Mr. Knight passed away in 1904 before seeing the railroad arrive, his legacy lived on as the community began to thrive around the new rail line. The railroad facilitated the transportation of timber and farm products and spurred population growth. This era marked a crucial chapter in the town’s development, with many of Knightdale’s older homes initially built to house railroad employees and their families.
